Spray Tan FAQ's

Are you new to spray tanning? Read on!

How does it work?

The ingredient in spray tan solution that turns the outer layer of your skin brown is called DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA is derived from sugarcane and is FDA approved for sunless tanning. The DHA interacts with amino acids in your skin to produce a brown coloration that mimics melanin. The artifical tan immediately appears on the skin's surface and will deepen over 24 hours, depending on the DHA percentage used. It will fade gradually over 5-10 days as the skin exfoliates naturally.

What happens in the appt?

After you book an appointment, you'll receive an email from me with prep instructions and a short list of things to bring to your appointment. Follow the prep instructions carefully to ensure best results!

We'll start your appt with a consultation so I can choose the best solution for you based on your skin type, the depth of color you want and if you have an event or outfit we need to consider. Then I'll spray you which takes 10-15 minutes. The appointment will last a total of 30 minutes (less than that if you spray tan regularly).

What's a Classic vs. Rapid tan?

A Classic (traditional) tan solution is designed to be left on the skin for 8 hours before rinsing off. At the end of 8 hours you will see your full tan color. I recommend a Classic tan for anyone getting a spray tan for the first time. My Classic solutions are aloe-based (best for dry skin) and in my experience they last the longest.

A Rapid tan solution is formulated to allow you to rinse off sooner, within 2-5 hours, depending on how dark you wish to be. Rapid solutions are ideal for those who wish to rinse off sooner or don't like sleeping in the solution. Keep in mind that Rapid tans still need about 24-hours to fully develop, so if you have an event we need to plan the timing of your appt accordingly. These solutions also require you to pay attention to the clock; if you forget to rinse off on time you could be much darker than you planned.

Both Classic and Rapid solutions give amazing results! For first time clients, those going on extended vacations or anyone with very dry skin, I recommend a Classic tan.  If you can't come in for an evening appt or don't like sleeping in the tan solution, I recommend a Rapid tan.

I'm nervous about it looking too dark/orange...

I understand! I've had my share of booth spray tans where I felt embarrassed to leave the house the next day (ha!), or where the color on my body was good but my face was too dark.

The good news is that spray tan solutions have come a long way over the last decade and certified technicians (like myself) who have been properly educated have a better understanding of the science of DHA. If you're nervous about looking too dark or unnatural, we will use a low percentage DHA solution that will give you a conservative "sun-kissed" color and make sure your face isn't too dark.

Is DHA safe?

Yes! DHA is FDA approved for sunless tanning, or for use on the topmost layer of skin. A spray tan is temporary and will gradually fade naturally. Spray tanning is a much safer alternative to tanning beds and harmful UV exposure.

Spray tanning is safe for you if you're pregnant, though some women prefer waiting until their second trimester. If you're nursing, I recommend you wear a strapless bra (I offer complimentary disposable ones) and that we use a Rapid solution which allows you to rinse off sooner. We can also time your Rapid tan appt so that you're able to rinse off before your little ones next feeding.

Can I get a spray tan if I'm under 18?

Yes - however, if you are a minor under the age of 18 I will require your parent's signature on a consent form AND that they come with you to your appointment. They will need to be in the room with us while you get sprayed. You will be required to wear a top (strapless bra, bathing suit top or pasties) and bottoms (underwear, thong or bathing suit bottoms).

Why are your appts mostly at night?

While your spray tan develops, you need to avoid getting wet, sweating or accidentally transferring bronzer to your hands. For this reason, many clients prefer to get sprayed at night so their tan can develop while they sleep. I also offer appointments on Saturday's from 8am to 2pm, which is ideal for those who prefer Rapid tans.
